Addressing The Mental Health Crisis Among Prostate Cancer Patients

The Impact of Prostate Cancer on Mental Health

Mental Health Challenges for Prostate Cancer Patients

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, and it can have a significant impact on mental health. A recent study funded by Movember and conducted by the University of South Australia (UniSA) tracked the scale and timing of mental health issues among 13693 men in South Australia who were diagnosed with prostate cancer. The study found that:

  • Anxiety and depression are common among prostate cancer patients, with up to 30% experiencing symptoms in the first year after diagnosis.
  • Patients receiving psychological interventions have greater improvement in depression.
  • Patients with high-risk prostate cancer had an 80% higher relative rate of major depression.
  • In men with prostate cancer receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) with a new diagnosis of depression or anxiety, nearly half are not adequately treated.

Background and Implications

The psychiatric implications of prostate cancer are increasingly recognized as having important effects on oncological and overall outcomes. The study's findings highlight the need for more research on the mental health of prostate cancer patients, as well as the development of effective interventions to address these challenges.
