Deadly Earthquake Strikes Taiwan, Killing 13 and Injuring Over 1,000

Taiwan Rocked by Powerful Earthquake

Nine Killed and 800 Injured in Major Quake

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 has struck Taiwan, killing at least 13 people and injuring over 1,000. The quake occurred at 2:26 AM local time (18:26 GMT) on Monday, April 3, and was the strongest to hit the island in over a quarter-century.

The earthquake was centered in the Hualien county on the east coast of Taiwan. It was followed by a series of strong aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 6.1. The quake caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure, including the collapse of a hotel and several apartment buildings.

Emergency crews are currently conducting search and rescue operations in the impacted areas. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue. The earthquake has also caused significant power outages and disruptions to transportation.

The Taiwan Central Weather Bureau has issued a tsunami warning for the east coast of the island, but it has not been lifted. Residents in coastal areas are advised to move to higher ground and stay away from the water.

The earthquake is the deadliest to hit Taiwan since 1999, when a 7.6-magnitude quake killed over 2,400 people.
